How to survive tough times

The one sure way to overcome life's struggles: our shield and greatest reward

4 minutes

I was laying in bed one morning, and I started thinking deeper into a thought I had during my prayer time with the Lord earlier–God, who created lightning strikes to have roughly 300 million volts which dwarfs the average household voltage use of 240–is much mightier than we realize.  He is so powerful that if we were to take time and consider the power He placed in many things He created, like the sun, it may terrify us of how inconceivably powerful and great that He truly is!

Then, still laying in bed and meditating on this, I was reminded of the Gate Control Theory of Pain which was developed in the 1960s by Ronald Melzack and Patrick Wall.  Basically, in laymen's terms, when the body is experiencing pain it can be "missed" or "overshadowed" by stronger or competing signals to the nervous system such as another pain site that is more intense than the first.

The revelation I got from this is that when we are going through challenges or trials in our life they can be positively overshadowed by our focus on something more intense, or rather greater, such as the infinite vastness/greatness of God.  It's like shifting our focus off a stone and onto a mountain–the sheer size difference puts things in proper perspective.

When we view our problem in light of God's greatness and power, suddenly that problem doesn't seem that impossible to solve or overcome anymore.

We then realize why Apostle Paul could say in Romans 8:18 AMP, "[But what of that?] For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (this present life) are not worth being compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us and for us and conferred on us!"

I mean, what?!!!

Could you imagine having such a strong perspective of the greatness of God–His power, glory, and sovereignty–that everything else in this life is so dwarfed that you genuinely live in the truth that nothing can compare with the glory to come?!

One scripture I believe the Holy Spirit reminded me of–yes, while still laying in bed, wheels turning in my head–was, "After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, 'Fear not, Abram. I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward.'" Genesis 15:1

Ok, let's really think about this.

This is God, the uncreated One who created everything including the rare lightning bolt that can have over 1 billion volts, is saying He is a shield and an exceeding great reward to Abram (a regular degular humanbeing)!  This ought to change the way we see God and our own lives!

Why? Because that is who Jesus is to us: our Shield and Exceeding Great Reward.  Also because if this truth can sink deep into us and flourish, we will understand that no matter what happens in this life, it doesn't and cannot stand against the truth that the Lord is our shield and exceeding great reward.

Say it with me in English, "Come hell or high water, I'm all set with God!"

The kids are testing your patience: "I'm all set with God!"

Marriage life/home life is up in flames: "I'm all set with God!"

Finances looking funny: "I'm all set with God!"

Declare the word of God, which is the sword, "But with God all things are possible" Matthew 19:26.

Just like toddlers, as soon as they see the better toy they drop the one they're holding to run and grab the better toy.  As soon as we behold the greatness of God, we will drop the anxieties, worries, stress, etc. of whatever situation we're going through and run to clutch our impenetrable shield and exceeding great reward.
