Confused. Aimless. Monotonous. Meaningless. That’s exactly how life felt to me and, for yearsss, I struggled with trying to figure out my purpose in life.

But not anymore!

If you are wrestling to figure out your life’s purpose, you’re in the right place.  In this article I'll give you the same formula that helped me to discover my life's purpose.  Follow along, be honest and patient with yourself.  I’ll guide you in not only discovering your life’s purpose, but jumpstart you to actually live it out.

And it’s bigger than you think.

Formula: A.S.K. = Ask + Seek + Knock

Who determines your purpose?

Let’s first establish this–your purpose has already been assigned to you.

If you think about it, purpose comes with existence. Stated a different way: if it doesn't exist, it cannot have a purpose.

Just like a manufacturer determines the purpose of the product they manufacture, your Creator has already determined your life’s purpose before you were created.

Spoiler alert: we all exist to glorify God, however, we each have our own tailored purpose that He has assigned to us individually.

STEP 1: Ask the right questions

What is it that only you can bring?

There is something that only you can bring to the Earth. If you do a quick Google search you'll see that there are over 8.27 billion people on Earth as of early 2026, and over 117 billion people to have ever lived.  Yet, there will only ever be one of you!

Let me drill this a bit deeper.  You're so unique that even the iris of your eyes have distinct colors, fibers, and textures.  They're each one of a kind just like your fingerprints and, yes, identical twins have different iris patterns too.

What gifts and talents do you possess?

Even if you feel like your gift/talent is “common,” there’s still that unique flare and seasoning only you can add.

Maybe 89% of the population can cook, but only you have a special or unusual knack for cooking delicious meals with the most random or limited ingredients.  Since tasty meals bring people together, this gift of yours can serve as a catalyst for richer relationships and stronger ties as people bond over the food you prepared.

What comes naturally or easy to you that doesn't for others?

This one can be easily overlooked because we are so used to our own gifts that we don't realize that what is natural/easy to us is foreign/challenging for others.

Maybe cooking isn't your strong suit, but you have this innate ability to connect with even the strangest stranger.  We’re living in a time of increased reports of loneliness, particularly in younger generations, according to recent research studies.  Your gift of making genuine and meaningful connections can literally save the life of someone who–before meeting you–may have felt there was no point in continuing to live on.

What are your “help passions”?

In regular English: there is at least one thing that drives, burdens, or inspires you to fix, improve, create, or eliminate that would help others to improve their lives one way or the other. I'll call this your “help passion(s).”

It may not be something that comes “easy” for you to do, but boy does it set you ablaze or keeps you determined to make an impact.  This could be a passion to end homelessness, be an advocate for a cause, invent or improve a product or service, or perhaps influence and inspire others.

STEP 2: Seek the answers

By now some ideas may have already popped into your mind as you've read the questions.  Jut these down in your journal or note app, and jump to step 3.

But, if you're still unsure of the answers, consider the following and remember that your gift/talent is intended to glorify God and benefit others.  That’s where life's purpose can be found.

#1 Think about the problems or the things people usually come to you for help.  If you’re the one all your friends, family, or even co-workers seek out for advice then that can indicate that your gift may be counsel or that you’re intellectually sound on a specific topic.

For me, when it comes to all things car problems, my brother comes to mind if I need guidance.  On the other hand, if I need wise advice it’s my dad that saves me from foolery.

#2 Ask the people who know you best.  I said earlier, we’re so used to our own gifts/talents that we may not recognize them as quickly.  Asking your loved ones on what they think those gifts/talents are can give you a fresh set of eyes to see what so natural to you.

#3 Your perspective.  Let’s not forget, no one knows what it’s like to walk a mile in your shoes.  Your life’s experiences are exactly the perspective people need from you.

Perhaps you’ve achieved something that is extremely difficult to achieve, but because you’ve done it you can now help others do the same.  Or perhaps you’ve survived a traumatic event/time, and now that you’ve made it through, you now have a unique perspective to help those who are currently going through what you did, and are struggling.

I once stumbled across a car racing meet-and-greet event, and when the host introduced one of the drivers, he shared what led him into racing.  He said that since he’s autistic, he wanted to professionally race to inspire others with autism so that they, too, can achieve whatever they work hard towards.  Needless to say, even at the event with the eruption of applause and cheers, it was evident that he was positively impacting the lives of others.

STEP 3: Knock on doors–the right ones for your life’s purpose will open for you

Once you’ve figured out your gifts/talents, knock the doors–or in other words take action to live out your purpose.

There is someone in need of what only you can give, and they need it exactly the way that only you can give it.  You are an answered prayer for someone, and they need you to show up by living out your life’s purpose.

The stakes are high and it’s impossible to walk this out successfully on your own.  Just like the manufacturer is the best source in troubleshooting and providing guidance with their products, you need your Creator to help you.

Speaking of knocking, the quickest and best way to discover your life’s purpose is by letting Jesus into your heart.  In Revelations 3:20, Jesus said, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”  He knows you better than you know yourself, and loves you enough to die for you.  So, let Him in and He’ll lead you by the hand to live a life beyond your imagination.

I’d love to hear from you.  What do you think is your life’s purpose?
